Accountants are in demand in South Africa like anywhere else in the world because of the role they play in business. Most people are become more interested in pursuing a career as chartered accountants but do not know how to become an accountant.
To pursue a career as a CA you will need to enroll for a Bachelor of Accounting Science degree or a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting degree or an equivalent CA (SA) undergraduate qualification at a SAICA accredited university.
Once you have completed your degree you will be required to complete a Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA) or a Higher Diploma in Accountancy (HDipAcc). This course focuses on Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and Management Accounting and Finance. The course takes a minimum of ne year and must be completed at a SAICA accredited university.
Upon completion of your CTA or HDipAcc, you are then eligible to enter into a 3-year learnership with a Registered Training Office (RTO) (to specialise in auditing) or an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) (to specialise in financial management).
During you learnership you will complete part one of the Qualifying Examination (QE1) Complete a specialist course relevant to your selected training programme in Financial Management or Auditing.
Complete part two of the Qualifying Examination (QE 2) (Financial management route) or Professional Practice Exam (PPE) (Auditing route) after having completed a minimum of 18-months of the training contract.
On passing the QE1 and QE2 or PPE, and having completed your learnership, you will become eligible to register as Chartered Accountant with SAICA. Source: Wits University
