Diploma Overview

Some of the duties of electrical and electronics technicians, technologists & engineers entail research, design, development, testing, maintenance, projects and overseeing the development of electronic systems and the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment and devices.
These duties may vary within companies. From the global positioning system that can continuously provide the location of a vehicle, to control systems in manufacturing plants to giant electric power generators; electrical and electronic professionals are responsible for a wide range of technologies.

Electrical and electronics technicians, technologists & engineers design, develop, test, maintain and supervise the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment. Some of this equipment includes broadcast and communications systems; electric motors, machinery controls, lighting, and wiring in buildings, automobiles, aircraft, and radar and navigation systems; and power generating, measurement, automation & control, robotics and transmission devices used by electric utilities. Some of the areas where electrical and electronics technicians, technologists & engineers work are military, medical, communication, manufacturing, power generation, computers, etc.

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers three specialised fields of study as below:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

A minimum of 130 total credits, with a maximum of 60 credits with “Partial Achievement” at NQF Level 4 is required, to register for the National Diploma: Engineering: Electrical (3208105). Selection is based on numbers, dependant on facilities and takes place on the day of official registration. Meeting minimum requirements does not in any way guarantee registration. Minimum requirements are as follows:-

Senior Certificate (Grade 12, Old Matric) or equivalent, with passes in Physical Science, Mathematics and English with minimum of C symbol on SG or D symbol on HG

OR

National Senior Certificate (Grade 12, New Matric) or equivalent, with minimum rating codes of English Home Language (4) or English First Additional Language (4), Mathematics (4) and Physical Science (4). 
NB. Maths Literacy is not considered at all

OR

Pass in all seven Pre-Tech subjects in Electrical Engineering at MUT with a minimum of 50% in each subject

OR

An appropriate minimum of N3 certificate in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 4 subjects passed with a minimum of 50% including Maths and Engineering Science, a pass in Grade 12 English (minimum C symbol on SG or D symbol on HG) with a Senior Certificate or equivalent

OR

An appropriate GCE, GCSE, IGCSE or Cambridge School Certificate with at least five subjects at GCE ‘O’ level including Mathematics, Science and English must have been passed with an A, B or C symbol. Three of the five subjects must have been passed at the same examination sitting.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants who do not meet the basic admission requirements to register for the National Diploma: Engineering: Electrical (3208105) have the following options. Selection is based on numbers, dependant on facilities and takes place on the day of official registration. Meeting minimum requirements does not in any way guarantee registration. Minimum requirements are as follows:-

National Diploma: Engineering (Extended Curriculum Programme)
This programme leads to a Diploma
Admission Requirements -

Senior Certificate (Grade 12, Old Matric) or equivalent, with at least E symbol in mathematics and Physical Science at standard grade or F symbol at higher grade and at least an E symbol pass in English at the matriculation or equivalent examination.

OR
National Senior Certificate (Grade 12, New Matric) or equivalent, with minimum rating codes of English Home Language (3) or English First Additional Language (3), Mathematics (3) and Physical Science (3). 
Satisfactory rating code (4) in their Home Language 
A minimum of 130 total credits, with a maximum of 60 credits with “Partial Achievement” at NQF Level 4

Pre-Technician Course: Electrical Engineering
This programme allows entry into the Diploma programme, subject to the student passing all seven subjects with a minimum of 50%

National Senior Certificate (Grade 12, New Matric) or equivalent, with minimum rating codes of English Home Language (3) or English First Additional Language (3), Mathematics (3) and Physical Science (3).
